Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Dermaplane treatment performed?

It is safely performed by using a sterile surgical Dermaplane. The dermaplane is held against the skin at a 45degree angle and stroked along the skin, just like shaving. However, the technician is stroking the instrument while holding the skin taut.

Is the Dermaplane Treatment Safe?

When performed by a professionally trained technician, the Dermaplaning is extremely safe. There are no more risks from Dermaplaning to the skin than if a man were to shave his face.

If you are "blading" the skin on the face, won't the hairs on the face grow back thicker?

No, this is physiologically impossible. Once the hair is cut, it will maintain a blunt edge, however, this blunt edge will not physiologically alter the hair it self. There are two types of hair that grow on our bodies:

  • Vellous hair, when cut or removed, will grow back at the same size and shape. The main structure of the hair does not change and can not be altered by dermaplaning.
  • Terminal hair is physilogically course. When this hair type is cut, it will always grow back course.

Can dermaplaning cause the skin to bleed?

Yes, it can cause the skin to bleed. The treatment is being performed with a very sharp instrument. However, the incidence of cutting into the skin is slim. A similar situation can be compared when you are shaving. While cuts are possible, it rarely happens. Dermaplaning the skin is identical. If it is performed by a trained technician, the chance of a cut is very slim!

What areas of the skin can be treated?

Dermaplaning the skin is performed on the face only. You should not dermaplane the nose, eye lids, neck or chest. Sometimes, technicians who are still learning practice on arms and legs as the skin is tougher in these areas. For clients, it is recommended for a technician to only dermaplane the face.

How often is this procedure performed?

Dermaplaning can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks. Treating the skin in this manner actually removes about 2 to 3 weeks worth of dead skin cells. The technician should allow the skin to complete it's normal skin cycle of approximately 30 days. It is not recommended to perform this treatment prior.

Can dermaplaning be performed with a chemical peel?

Yes. It is perfectly safe to dermaplane the skin along with a peel.

Does the skin actually peel from dermaplaning?

Occasionally the skin will peel after a dermaplaning. If the procedure is done at a 2 week interval, the client's skin's growth cycle will not have had a chance to complete. At this time, you will be blading skin that does not need it and peeling may occur.

In the event that you are dermaplaing the skin with a chemical peel, the client may experience some peeling. We recommend not over-exfoliating the skin or using too strong a peel with dermaplaning.

What skin types/conditions can be treated?

All skin types may benefit from dermaplaning. It is not recommended to dermaplane a client who my have acne or an excessive production of sebaceous gland oils. Sebaceous glands excrete oil along the vellous hair. If the hair is removed, the oils may cause bacterial growth that can stimulate acne outbreaks.
